For each of the last five years, a small team of students has taken part in the SKS Spring Robotics Competition. While the robotics "face off" was only available to upper-schoolers in the first two years, it was subsequently opened up to the entire student body. Students who wish to participate are introduced to basic mechanical principals, gear ratios (torque vs. speed, stability and center of gravity), as well as more complex techniques (compound gears, differential steering) to get the most out of the remote-controlled robots they engineer for the competition. Participants are evaluated on how effective they are at completing a specific task as well as their creativity and ability to work as a team. Creative, "out of the box" solutions, as well as more traditional approaches to the engineering challenges have been demonstrated in these competitions.
Despite the fact that no course credit is earned for the Spring competition, there has always been a tremendous response from the participants and fans for the outdoor, torch-lit event.
